Left Coast Roast is a caffeine-fueled guide to 55 key companies in Washington, Oregon, and Northern California, from small artisan roasters like Heart, Coava, and Kuma and history-making icons like Peet's and Starbucks, to rapidly expanding shops like Portland's Stumptown and San Francisco's Blue Bottle. Profiles describe each company's background, roasting history, and style, and explain how to visit and order beans for home brewing. This book is a coffee primer, with notes on lingo, varieties, roasting basics, and how to brew the perfect cup, and it makes an ideal guide for the coffee obsessed. Neuschwander, who began working as a barista and has judged barista competitions, created Left Coast Roast as a guide for the coffee obsessed. Visit her website, leftcoastroast.com.
Hanna Neuschwander has written extensively about the quality-based coffee-roasting movement in the Pacific Northwest for publications including Portland Monthly, Willamette Week, Edible Portland, and Barista Magazine. She also writes about food and has produced several travel guides, including Secret Portland and Secret Vancouver. Hanna lives in Portland, Oregon, with her husband, where they possess an entire kitchen cabinet full of devices for making coffee. She pollutes her morning cup with one sugar and a spoonful of cream, but takes all afternoon espresso neat.
About Edwin Martinez: Edwin grew up in Guatemala and is a third generation coffee grower and owner of the award winning Finca Vista Hermosa located in the Highlands of the Huehuetenango region. FVH coffee has placed in the Cup of Excellence and has been selected by the National Guatemalan Coffee Growers Association 4 years in a row to represent the region's terroir to the world. Out of more than 90,000 growers in Guatemala only a few dozen controled all exports for decades and in 2002 Edwin developed a process that paved the way for over 10,000 small producers to begin exporting and selling direct in the global marketplace. Edwin is a Licensed Q Grader and placed 7th in the World Cup Tasting Championship in Copenhagen 2008. He is also author of "Diaries of a Grower" series in Roast Magazine and is the lead representative to the press for the specialty coffee industry for the Burke Museums Coffee exhibit and traveling museum from Jan 2009-July 2012.
